cool (1959)

Bill Evans, piano
Scott LaFaro, bass
Paul Motian, drums

Bill Evans arranged this piece in a way that liberates him to create phrases that are not usual to common jazz song structures. One chorus has only 10 measures (12 or 16 is more common). The harmonic progression gives the music a sense of perpetual motion. The phrasing is also fluid because of the 10-measure structure. The ability of Scott LaFaro to follow Evans so closely on bass attests to the unique relationship these two musicians had. Scott LaFaro was a spiritual companion of Evans and was not relegated to walking bass lines or making time (keeping steady time). He was a true melodic partner.
